Singer, Songwriter, Children's Author
Tim A. McKenzie, author of the Baxter Barret Brown’s Bass
Fiddle Children’s Book series, lives with his wife Carma of
nearly 41 years, in Shallowater, Texas and is published through
Houston based “Bright Sky Press.” An employee of Oxy
Permian, also a Houston based company, McKenzie has work in
the West Texas oil field for 25 years while entertaining in
various groups and as a single act for 35 years.
As a singer/songwriter and children’s author, he began his work
in live music in a group called The Hard Travelers from
Lubbock Christian College in the mid 1970’s. After two years
of “coast to coast” recruiting in that group, graduating with a
degree in electronics, he signed on as an entertainer at the Lazy
B Chuckwagon doing western shows in Estes Park Colorado.
Returning to Texas and a career in the gas and oil industry in
the mid 1980’s, he does school programs, book festivals, and
writing seminars promoting his book series while also
performing at functions such as the Cactus Theater, the
National Cowboy Symposium and The National Ranching
Herritage Center events. Although his book series is centered
around the upright bass, and is the primary instrument he has
played in several groups through the years such as Brazos West
and Blue Prairie, the main body of his entertainment package
includes 6 and 12 string guitars, with occasional appearances of
the banjo and fiddle.
